Sights and Activities

Museums in Tromsø

Several museums in Tromsø offer a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the High North. The Polar Museum, housed in a former customs warehouse, tells the story of Arctic explorers and trappers who ventured into the polar regions. At the Perspektivet Museum, you discover local artists and photographers. Polaria is also well worth a visit. This Arctic experience centre combines exhibitions and panoramic films with an aquarium showcasing Arctic marine life. During the feeding sessions, you can watch the seals up close.

Arctic Cathedral

From the city centre, walk across the Tromsø Bridge to Tromsdalen, where the iconic Arctic Cathedral immediately catches the eye. The church opened in 1965, and its distinctive architecture resembles a huge iceberg. Step inside to admire the impressive stained-glass window, one of the cathedral’s highlights. The cathedral also hosts regular midnight sun and northern lights concerts, offering an extra reason to visit.

The Best Activities in and around Tromsø

Tromsø offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures throughout the year. In winter, you might be lucky enough to spot the northern lights while a whale safari and a husky or snowmobile tour are among the most popular experiences. You can also discover Sámi culture in the High North, learn more about their unique traditions and meet reindeer up close.

Summer in and around Tromsø is just as rewarding, with extra-long days and the magic of the midnight sun. Hiking, kayaking, fishing, or taking a boat trip through the fjords: there is no shortage of options. Prefer something less active? Take the cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen for panoramic views over the city. On a rainy day, head to a sauna, explore the city centre or go shopping.
