Vesterålen Norway: Travel Tips for Your Trip

Vesterålen in Norway lies north of the famous Lofoten Islands, yet for many travelers this island group is still a relatively undiscovered gem. Because it’s quieter here, Vesterålen feels far more authentic than the well-trodden tourist hotspots. It is the perfect destination for peace seekers and nature lovers. You can explore charming fishing villages, go hiking, experience the local culture, and - with a bit of luck - spot wildlife. In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know to prepare for your trip to Vesterålen, Norway.

Vesterålen: A Diverse Norwegian Archipelago

Vesterålen consists of four large islands and several smaller ones, with Hinnøya being the largest. The archipelago lies above the Arctic Circle. From late May to mid-July, you can experience the midnight sun, when daylight lasts for 24 hours. From late September to late March, the magical northern lights can be seen dancing across the sky. From towering mountains to deserted beaches, Vesterålen showcases the raw beauty and diversity of Northern Norway. Below, you’ll find our favorite places to visit in Vesterålen.

Fishing Villages Nyksund and Nykvåg

Nyksund was once a thriving fishing village, but fell into decline in the 1970s. The harbor became too small for modern vessels, the local school closed, and residents moved away. Nyksund turned into a ghost town. Luckily, in recent decades, adventurers and artists have breathed new life into the village. Nowadays, you’ll find cozy restaurants, an art gallery, and unique accommodation to stay overnight. Nyksund is only accessible via a narrow, spectacular coastal road, with the final stretch being an experience in itself. The village is also the starting point of the Dronningruta (Queen’s Route), one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the region.

The fishing village of Nykvåg, located on the west coast of Langøya island, is a paradise for birdwatchers. The nearby nature reserve is home to one of Norway’s largest colonies of black-legged kittiwakes. But even if birds aren’t your main interest, the area offers wonderful hikes with viewpoints that reward you with breathtaking panoramas of the coastline.

Wildlife Watching in Vesterålen

There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife in Vesterålen, with the island of Andøya being particularly suited for nature enthusiasts. In Bleik, you can join a puffin safari. On a traditional fishing boat, a passionate local guide will take you to Bleiksøya Island. During the summer the impressive bird cliff becomes a breeding ground for thousands of puffins. You can also frequently see sea eagles and other seabirds in the area.

Most travelers head to Andenes for a whale safari. The waters around Andenes are among the best places in the world to see sperm whales. With a bit of luck, you might also spot orcas and other whale species. Keep in mind that the excursions are weather-dependent and may be canceled at short notice. Even while driving around the islands, it’s worth keeping your eyes open. You might suddenly find yourself face-to-face with a moose, the king of the Norwegian forests.

Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes

If you plan to visit only one museum during your trip, make it the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes. Here, you’ll discover the story of the iconic Hurtigruten ship, which has been sailing along the Norwegian coast since 1893. The museum offers a fascinating insight into life on board and the important role the Hurtigruten ships have played in Norway’s history. The centerpiece of the modern museum is an original 1950s ship that you can freely explore. Step inside the engine room, walk along the cabins, and soak up the atmosphere of days gone by.

Traveling to Vesterålen, Norway

We visited Vesterålen during a road trip through Northern Norway, booked through Nordic. This travel agency offers a direct flight to Evenes, an ideal starting point for exploring both the Lofoten and Vesterålen. Of course, you can also organize your trip independently. If you choose to do so, be sure to book your flight, rental car, and accommodation well in advance to secure the best prices. Below, you’ll find some practical tips to help you prepare for your trip.

Practical Tips for Visiting Vesterålen, Norway

  • We like to rent our car through Sunny Cars, as all insurance is included in the rental price, and tolls and any ferry fees are automatically covered. With a rental car or camper, you can explore the islands flexibly and at your own pace. Drive carefully on the narrow coastal roads and always park in a safe spot if you want to take photos of the stunning surroundings. Never stop in the middle of the road.
  • Do you want to combine your trip to Vesterålen with other destinations in Northern Norway? From the Lofoten Islands it’s best to take the ferry from Fiskebol to Melbu. The crossing takes only 25 minutes and runs several times a day. Especially during the summer, it’s wise to arrive at the harbour at least half an hour before departure to make sure you don’t miss the boat. Between Vesterålen and Senja you can take the ferry from Andenes to Gryllefjord. Since departures are limited, the route over land is often the better option.
  • Finally, pack plenty of warm and waterproof clothing. The weather in Vesterålen can change quickly, but with the right gear, you can enjoy the breathtaking nature in full comfort.
